I've ran an HDMI 1.3 cable from my PC with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 (OEM DVI to HDMI adapter) through my Sony STR-DG720 into my Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080. The video is coming through fine at 1080p, but the audio will only playback in stereo. I've selected the "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" on my PC's playback devices page.

Ati hd4850 over hdmi - audio not working. If not, then i think i read somewhere the the 4870 has an inbuilt audio controller this could mean that there is basically a sound card on the graphics card it self and all you need to do is install the hdmi drivers and enable the audio over hdmi. Update your graphics card drivers today.

The 4870 does not support audio over MDP/HDMI, so you'll have to stream the sound separately via the line out, headphone or optical built-in ports, or use a 3rd party alternative, such as a USB or Firewire interface. About a/v syncing or lagging issues, there shouldn't be any... unless the cables are longer than 10-15 meters or so, IME.
