And we want to show people that high-quality audio can be done with a Raspberry Pi and a few HATs 🙂 For what normally would cost upwards of £400/£500 (and even into the many £000’s), we’ve created a range of Raspberry Pi HATs that can deliver 32 bit/384kHz audio for less than £100 (including the Pi).

The RPi’s secondary weakness is its sound quality. The onboard analogue output is inferior to both the Sonos Connect and the Google Chromecast Audio. One quick fix is to add an external USB DAC. Alas, on all but the Model 4, the RPi shares its USB data bus with Ethernet. Audible dropouts are common.

The one in the Raspberry Pi starts rolling frequencies off somewhere before 7kHz. This cuts out a lot of the air and harmonic detail. The other trade-off is that, to get this much frequency range, the dynamic range is reduced to 11 bits. That’s 32 times less depth than the 16-bit audio of a CD.

The audio out of the Pi is pretty poor in general. I think it is best to use either a USB sound card, or a GPIO header sound card like one of these. The reason is that the audio codecs which they use are far more linear then a pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy which the Pi uses. This linearity implies much better sound quality.
