The passthrough device is when XBMC doesn't decode the audio bitstream. It passes the audio information through to something downstream to decode and then convert to analog to put out to the speakers. So if it's a DTS or AC3 (Dolby Digital) soundtrack, XBMC just passes that information along to your receiver or TV to deal with.

Passthrough of audio is sent to my receiver. Many of my files have the HD audio in the containers however my receiver is 5.1 legacy DD and DTS only so I only play those audio tracks. I have used normal/fast/and super overlock all with same results. Later today I will receive a gigabyte router that I bought to try and see the results if any.
