https://papers.freebsd.org/2003/bsdcon/baldwin-using_freebsd_to_render_realtime_audio_video/
Although FreeBSD was largely suitable for this application, a few modifications were required and several workarounds were employed. Jun 18, 2010. #2. There is a freebsd-realtime mailing list, but it hasn't seen any activity since late 2009. puredyne uses the JACK sound system, so using JACK on FreeBSD would be a good start. I don't think there is any difference between having sound drivers loaded as modules or compiled into the kernel.

FreeBSD Audio Tue 12 October 2021. I started using FreeBSD in 2016 as a dual-boot with Linux. The reason was that at the time Linux provided no support for real-time threads and preemptive scheduling but did provide a wider choice of audio applications. Today, as the FreeBSD audio ecosystem improved a lot, I am a happy single-OS user.

https://github.com/jackaudio/jack2/issues/129
This is a setting that needs to be figured out on FreeBSD. There is nothing jackd can do to fix this. On ubuntu systems, users can get permission by adding a file in /etc/security/limits.d/ that contains roughly these lines: @audio - rtprio 95 @audio - memlock unlimited. where 'audio' is a group name.
