I use onboard sound from my realtek 889A out via digital coax to my denon 2807 and am using foobar with asio as player and apple lossless files (speakers are paradigm studio 100s). I am curious if anyone knows whether my quality is limited by the realtek 889A.

However they seem to have the higher-end Realtek 889A built in. To go PCI-E on the SCSI will be brain damage...the wireless or audio option will cost $50-70 roughly which would double my upgrade cost once I sell my existing items (I am looking to move from my current system to the new one for $50 once I sell my old gear).

Everything is fine except for the sound quality I'm getting from the onboard Realtek HD (ALC 889A) chip which is muddy and dull with no pop. Also when using Ventrilo incoming voices cause the audio to crackle (only when using Ventrilo though, otherwise its just dull).

While the above may be true for the ALC889a, there are a lot of codec chips used for many implementations of the Intel HD audio which natively supports only 48, 96 and 192 kHz. And since all of those codec chips lack hardware DSP capability, the resampling of 44.1, 88.2 and 176.4 kHz audio takes place in the drivers.

THD test - Realtek ALC889a via Gigabyte board vs - Creative X-Fi Surround 5.1 (USB) The test tone is at 1khz - the little white peaks are harmonic distortion. -90 is barely audible, the green line is the realtek onboard. What this indicates is the Creative card creates a tiny bit more distortion than the onboard one.

    50. Depends on who you ask, though from my experience onboard sound is usually sub par to a stand alone sound card even. That is if you use the analog connections the dac usually sucks. Going from onboard audio to a stand alone sound card is an improvement if you get a good one.
