ok, i fixed it. i plugged the ac97 header instead of the hd audio into the front panel connectors on the motherboard and now everything works. it's wierd, though, because some of the things i saw in my searches said that ac97 front panel connectors actually cause this problem. plus, i had the hd audio plugged in before and had no problems, but at least it's working now.

It is brand new, the sound of the PC internal speaker (realtek audio) is very low, even with volume set at 100%.
