You should be able to get the audio working w/o having to remove the service pack. You need to simply 'trick' Windows into thinking that SP2 is installed when you actually have SP3 installed. Follow the steps in this thread, but install the audio drivers between steps 3 and 4. Use the RealTek HD drivers from this link. That should do it! Good luck!

I normally use an external Creative PCI-E card for my audio but now after a fresh XP SP3 install I cannot get any audio device to be noticed by Windows. I even removed the card and tryed to get the onboard RealTek HD device to work but with no such luck.

On a fresh install of XP SP2 with only chipset and video drivers and SP3 RC1 installed the latest Realtek drivers appeared to install but did not show up in Device Manager after restarting. Ditto after reinstalling. Only way to get them to load was uninstall SP3 and install the Realtek drivers again. Then after reinstalling SP3 all was well.
