42. Onboards are getting better but as was mentioned they cannot compete with add-in cards or external gear. You can use an onboard to supply a S/Pdif signal to an external DAC but their analog capabilities are usually seriously lacking. Even some of the cheapest external USB devices will still provide better sound.

Huh. According to the spec sheet for Realtek HD Audio it can actually support 192khz audio. I just set it to the default, which is 24/48. All enhancements are turned off. I guess it's some quirk with the driver. I suppose the quality really does come from the amp.
