My fix to red light problem... I tried poking around in the audio jack with all kinds of items with no change. Then I used a pressurized can of contact cleaner and "presto" no more light. My internal speakers worked, my headphones worked, and when I removed the headphones the internal speakers worked again.

Yeah, that red light is likely indicating that the computer is sending an optical signal throught the port because it believes an optical cable is plugged in to it.. You can try to clear the port by inserting and removing a headphone cable, or using some other method in case there's debris there (using a paperclip, GENTLY scrape the inside of the port.
