Sterling Audio ST55 FET | RecordingHacks.com

The Sterling Audio ST55 FET appears to be a reincarnation of the Groove Tubes GT55. Both are fixed-cardioid solid-state condenser microphones with the 32mm “disk resonator” capsule pioneered by GT founder Aspen Pittman. The capsule in both mics uses a 3-micron diaphragm. In our sample microphone, the capsule polarization voltage was 38VDC.

The ST55 exhibits a very clear sound with an average degree of proximity effect (along the lines of what one would expect of a LDC condenser microphone). The enhanced high frequency clarity of the ST55 might make it a good choice for a vocalist or speaker with a bass-heavy voice. I would not hesitate to use this microphone for voice-over work.

The ST55 can sound very good on fingerstyle guitar. It may be a bit bright and brittle sounding at times. Dry is a good word for it. It can be a little noisy, too. I can see it might be really great on some singers. Overall, I don't see any reason not to own a pair. Share Reply Quote 15th April 2007 | Show parent # 12 South Brokelyn Gear Addict
