I'm having some problems with Rhythmbox playing music through PulseAudio. I suspect it's actually a problem with gstreamer and PulseAudio, because gstreamer-properties can't play any sounds through the PulseAudio plugin. I haven't had to deal much with sound problems before.

I have a clean 12.04 install. Imported my mp3's (from a windows share) into Rhythmbox and although they do appear to be playing no sounds is to be heard. Playing a radio-stream works just fine. Playing the same MP3 in Spotify works fine too. I have looked at the mixer settings (but as radio is playing that does not seem to be the issue).

2 Answers Active Oldest Votes 1 You may have ended up with erroneous user settings for Pulse Audio. To restore default settings we may delete its hidden configuration directory in ~/.pulse (or ~/.config/pulse, depending on release version). This directory will be recreated to default settings after restarting pulseaudio.
