Rockbox detected it as a 5th gen. I got it working again after it drained the battery completely. Then I could restore it normally with iTunes. After that I tried again to install Rockbox but with the same result. I used RockboxUtility v1.4.1. I'll try again later, but as of now, at least the ipod works.

There's only 1 way to get this thing back to working: Hardware fiddling. To get into recovery mode you have to short 2 contacts on your player. Doing this will let you access the NAND from a Linux computer and write things to it. At this point its not like you have a lot to lose siunce RockBox has Panicked its way to being unbootable.

I've had the first part happen, the "Panic dir cache... that's a Rockbox error, but hitting the power button again immediately rebooted Rockbox and all was well. Try booting into the original firmware by setting the lock switch, then put a pin in the reset hole and hold it there, it should at least power down if you hold it long enough.
