You can do this by using one of those stereo RCA to stereo 3.5.. leads and plug the 3.5mm end into an MP3 player. make sure the volume on the MP3 is at its lowest setting and then switch on the 1000X and have speakers connected. Start playing the MP3 unit and gently increase the volume on the MP3 player.

I am repairing a Sansui 1000X at the moment, and she's being a tad difficult. The right channel when listening to phono and FM has distortion. In mono the sound is clean. The issue is with the pre-amp as you can decouple the pre-amp from the main amp, and when I fed a signal into the main amp she has a lovely sound.

The way you have it, signal is passing through the phone preamp in the nad, the preamp in the nad, then the pre and be power amp of the Sansui. I'm not an expert at all, but I wouldn't personally use an external preamp (excluding phono) unless the receiver had pre-outs and main-ins you could disconnect and tap into.
