This is not an issue with the audio cable, in fact the audio cable was originally used in days of old prior to Windows XP in order to rip or play music from the CD. Under XP and Vista the transfer is digital, down the IDE/SATA cable and no separate cable is required (or possible, in the case of SATA DVD Drives).

Go to device manager for the drive and look at the properties, make sure it is set to digital cd audio. It will then play audio over the PCI bus. You don't need to hook up the optical drives to your soundcard anymore unless you want analog audio. I have a SATA DVD drive and sound works fine from it and it is not hooked up to the soundcard.
