You might just wanna try to set it (SDL_AUDIODRIVER) to 'pulse', then check which games still have working Audio, and then set it to 'pulseaudio'. If your problem is related to this bug/issue report then some games will have sound and others not, and as soon as you change it to 'pulse' (and restart steam to get the new env-settings) then the former working sound-games …

Indeed, "export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse" apparently is incorrect, and only happened to work by luck with previous SDL versions (for years though...). So changing it to "pulseaudio" in /etc/profile.d/pulseaudio.sh is actually the proper fix. There is a possible downside to this however: libSDL1 maybe doesn't recognize "pulseaudio" yet, only "pulse".

You can try forcing the pulseaudio driver by setting the environment variable SDL_AUDIODRIVER to 'pulse' before you start the game. Note that there is a good reason it's not default; the audio will have very regular glitching, which can be somewhat remedied by setting the pulseaudio daemon to run at realtime priority.
Sound in DOSBox
