If you use the optical/digital output to a second zone then you are limited to outputting digital audio sources that are connected to the main AV amp to the second zone I'd guess that having both the analogue passive zone 2 outputs and the digital output to zone 2 is required in order to to access both analogue and digital sources connected to the main AV amp.
