Only certain Macs can output audio through the mini display port. Those that can't will need to have auxiliary speakers connected to the 3.5mm audio jack or other solution through a separate cable system. If you have a mini display port on your mac than it does support audio out but you have to use an hdmi cable as mini display port to dvi and all other besides HDMI don't carry the audio signal through. Just make sure you are using HDMI and it will work out. That is only true of MBPs produced since April 2010: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
