The HD 555 are great value headphones and are 90% of the HD 595 for a lot less money. They are basically a slightly less refined headphone to the HD 595. The velour pads are very comfortable. The Sennhesier HD 555 has a fairly smooth frequency response, which is what we look for in a pair of headphones; big peaks or troughs in the frequency response would mean certain frequencies are being overly exaggerated or suppressed. The HD 555 has a few peaks and troughs in the mid to high range, though, which is a little less than perfect.

The HD555, which is supposed to replace it does sound warmer, but is still harsh and easily tires the ears. This review is based on the impressions of only the first hours. As over-ear headphones, the Sennheiser HD 555s are comfortable, but heavy. They have velour padding, which is really soft, but can make your head feel itchy after prolonged use. Also, these things are really not portable: they have a thick band, giant cups, and a long cord, and there's no case or anything else to help manage it.

EDIT (14.1.2015) : After using quite a lot of another headphones, I will give HD 555 one more star. They are far better then they should be. Recently I came back from DT880 to my repaired HD555 (cause one driver in DT880 is either dead or half-dead). And I was absolutely stunned how much clearer HD 555 sound is.

Sennheiser must have addressed the issues and improved quality control. The biggest difference between HD595 and its little bro is speed and clarity. While HD555 lacked the speed for rock, HD595 handles it very adequately. HD595 also sound much crisper and clearer. The bass is noticeably tighter and extend further.
