I've since used the N72 with great success on guitar, bass, drum overhead, and vocals, using many different mics. With my tube-modified MXL 2001 as a mono overhead, I was able to get a really huge drum sound. The floor tom was especially big. The preamp sounded great even when I cranked up the input and backed off the output trim.

The sound of the Seventh Circle Audio N72 is amazing! Unbelievably true to the Neve tone and it sounds even better than a few of the other Neve clones that I've used out there, namely the ones made by Vintech, although it's probably close to the Brent Averill ones as well.

Worth noting is that Tim Ryan got the gain staging "right" in that the gain is divided as evenly as possible between the two stages; therefore, the N72 can provide a total of 70 dB of gain while all the active stages are operating within design limits.
