I have the same problem but with the Mac mini - I connected the mini with DVI to HDMI cable into Input 6 [on Sharp Aquos LC-46SE94U] - connected audio from the headphone jack to a splitter into the red and white inputs associated with the hdmi input resulting in no sound through the TV speakers.

I have been trying to solve this problem with a Bose 300 Soundbar. I was finally able to fix it by connecting the soundbar using both the HDMI and optical audio cables.
