If the selector switch is not switched to the input/s that you have the shorting plugs on, it is an open circuit, and a shorting plug should have no effect on an open circuit as it is not connected to in your case the Autoformer, and in an active preamps case, to the input stage transistors. Input shorting plugs are cheap -- for single ended inputs buy the cheap Radio Shack jobs and solder a wire between hot and ground; $5 and 1/2 hour and no worries from open ended inputs. I saw an ad for very expensive rhodium plated ones from a very high end cable manufacturer. Pshaw!!! Use that money towards a Koestu, or other great cartidge!

The kind that came with your TV, DVR, DVD player, etc. Cut the RCA ends off of one of those cables leaving two inches of wire attached to each plug. Get some wire strippers out and expose the positive and negative copper wires coming out of each RCA plug. Twist them together, no solder required.
