The i5.3 has a massive 500-volt-amp toroidal transformer, which Simaudio claims has low magnetic, electrical and thermal loss to improve current delivery and dynamics. Furthermore, the i5.3 has no overall feedback, and like all Simaudio products it boasts a very short signal path -- a mere 14 inches from input to output.

With this review I conclude an audiophile's progression through the price/performance ratios of three very musical solid-state integrated amplifiers: the NAD C370 ($699, reviewed in January 2002), the Arcam DiVA A85 ($1499, February 2002), and now the Simaudio Moon i-5 ($2595). In the process I was fascinated to hear how each amp …

In my review of the i5.3, I noted that what really caught my attention was its sparkling highs. This is also true of the CD5.3. Vibrant, engaging and dynamic are all apt words for describing its sound. Music leapt into the room, filling out not just the space in front of the speakers but behind them as well, and into the corners of the room.

I was quite impressed by the precision and quality of acoustic material. Instruments where detailed and accurate while still maintaining a linear response. Many amplifiers are a tad bit bright to perceive and achieve better detail however this …

The i3.3's amplifier section puts out 100Wpc into an 8 ohm load and 200W into 4 ohms, these power ratings achieved by running the amp in class-A/B biasing. However, true to its high-end leanings, Simaudio has biased the i3.3 to output its first 5W in full class-A.

The i3.3 fits between the i-1 and the i5.3 in Simaudio’s Moon series of integrated amplifiers, but the ability to add the options of DAC, phono stage, and balanced input puts it in a class of its own in Sim’s product line. It’s the most flexible high …

As for the treble, the simaudio is not as bright as the rotel and is easier to listen to for long periods. Surprisingly the rotel comes close in detail to the simaudio, with the I-3 having just a tad more detail. Overall I am thrilled with the more musical sound of the simaudio. The build quality is second to none.
