I have similar issues with a Sony KDL-52EX701 using it with a Harmon Kardon 310 Audio-Video receiver and a Sony BDP=BX2 Blu-Ray player. I can get 5.1 audio fine from the Blu-Ray player to work with my AVR unit, but no sound from the TV to the AVR over the optical audio output when watching either off-the air programming or Netflix streaming video.

I have a 1yo Sony X9500 65" TV. I use the optical audio output to feed into my old stereo and its been working great for the last year but it has stopped working. I replaced the cable but the problem persisted. I tried it with a different TV and the stereo is working correctly so its definitely the TV that's the problem.
