The RIVE onboard sound is good so if you are just looking to listen to music and watch some movies you are good to go. As far as gaming, I find the X-FI Titanium Fatal1ty at an advantage over the onboard audio. I also use the X-FI Titanium Fatal1ty front I/O panel for my microphone when on TS or Vent.

I still use my Creative X-Fi Fatality. It's PCI. I'm going to face a similar dilemma when I upgrade in a month or so to Haswell, since I won't want to use onboard, and will need a new sound card! I can't stand onboard audio, the difference is quite noticeable when you use quality speakers/headphones.

On the contrary i find not only has the sound quality improved but the gameplay fps has become smoother on my Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer card compared to the Realteak high definition onboard sound and this is on an E8400 and 8800GT gfx card.
