Essentially what is happening, is the receiver is trying to detect which codec to use. The best way to resolve this is to go HDMI if you can. I have my 42" LG Plasma TV connected via an Optical cable from my Yamaha HTR 6030 Amp/Reciever which has 5.1 surround speakers attatched to it. For audio, however, I have to use digital optical because my receiver is 12 years old and doesn't support HDMI. So for audio I use digital optical. Same set up. I have one digital optical audio cable running from my DirecTV box to my Sony AVR and another running from my PS3 to my AVR. The PS3 works great.
