Renaming the file extension is going to acheive absolutely nothing. I've had various problems with Subtitle Workshop rejecting valid video files ( generally MKVs), in those cases I've used AVIDemux to dumb them down into AVI files ( XVID video codec, MP3 for audio ), they've been foolproof so far.

I've been using Subtitle Workshop for a few years, and it has been working perfectly for me. But for some reason it will now not play a particular .avi file; the subtitle loads properly and I can hear the audio, but there is no video, only a black screen. There is no problem with the codecs, since all my other .avi files open without problems.
