I followed your advice and configured my router to forward the ports 5000 and 5001, TCP and UDP to the Synology and it works: I can connect from my iPad using DS Audio (HTTPS switch off). I can't imagine how the port 5000 (tcp) is both use for the web administration and dsaudio but I'm too lazy right now to try out other combinations.

For audio, I'd stick to a light UPnP/DLNA server like the Synology or Minim ones. Most devices, TVs, streaming boxes etc. will have a playback client. For occasional streaming outside of the house, I think the easiest way is still DS-Audio.
