The AT150 MLX is generally considered a good choice for SL-1200 as sugested by Johnny but I have never tried it. I am curently running a Benz Glider, which I am loving, but that is a little out of your range. If you are patient you can pick them up used for around $400 or less. It truely out performs any other cartridge that I have tried.

For cartridges consider: Audio Technica AT440MLa Ortofon 2M Blue If you can spend a little more the Audio Technica AT150MLX is great with the stock SL-1200 tonearm and is probably the best MM cartridge under $400. The Onkyo TX-8255 only has a MM phono stage, so if you want to use a MC cartridge you will need an outboard phono peramp.

Note that there are one or two "audiophile" cartridges which use conical styli, like the Denon DL-103. Everything about the Denon stylus - the cut, polish, mounting, etc. - was fine-tuned years ago by Denon for maximum performance. But the DL-103 is the exception not the rule when it comes to conical styli. Elliptical styli are the next step up.

I have a 1200 Mk II and using the same cartridge my Rega Planar 3 sounds much better. The Technics is good but my Thorens and Rega tables sound better. Tighter bass wider soundstage, much quieter background.
