I am using a Samsung lcd hd set, with an hdmi connection. For sound I have used both optical audio from the Tivo and stereo audio from the Samsung set. I have experienced the audio problem from both the stereo audio and the digital audio from the Tivo. There is definitely a problem with the Tivo, not with the tv.

Try rebooting both your TV and TiVo (unplug both for about 15 seconds; plug your TV and then TiVo back in). That will reintroduce the HDMI "handshake" between TiVo and your TV. If that doesn't fix it try doing the same thing with a new HDMI cable...or temporarily run composite audio/video (RCA yellow and L/R out) from TiVo to your TV.

The update has resulted in the optical out on the TiVo no longer being able to output Dolby Digital encoded audio.
