The consensus is that there is a bug that disables your soundcard (Onboard or otherwise). That wouldn't explain why it plays in cutscenes. It appears this is an issue with Tomb Raider ignoring the default sound output. This bug is something I encountered a long time ago when playing it. It would default to a weird sound output and I had to change it in the volume config tool in kde. As you have seen, if you change it to the correct output it begins to work.

I noticed that when there is a pre-rendered cutscene, such as when she watched the video on her camera or the opening pre-rendered cinematic, the audio tends to skip and glitch up.
