Volume pots should be linear and tone should be audio taper. Most people suggest the opposite because they are confusing an amplified circuit with an RC circuit. The tone of your guitar is not an amplifier circuit where an audio taper would come into play. It is a capacitor resistor circuit. The two are different and should be treated as such.

AFAIK tone pots should be linear taper. Audio taper is logarithmic with fast, coarse adjustment at one end and slow, very fine at the other. Linear taper pots should roll off the highs in an even, more controllable way. I'm wondering because a number of vendors recommend their CTS audio taper pots for both volume and tone.

The volume control, certainly with passive circuits, should be linear. Going from 10 to 9 should be a 10% reduction, not 26%. The tone control is a different deal.
