Toslink is direct digital signal from your soundcard, that's should be better. USB's signal should be: Soundcard-> PC's mainboard-> USB chip-> USB cable ->DAC's USB receiver. I've tried coxial vs. USB with my PC, coxial is more better. (I've mod. my card, removed Toslink to …

It all depends on the DAC. Modern async USB DACs overcome most any problems the interface has. USB has really become the standard which is unfortunate because Firewire really was a much better way of doing it. Toslink almost always will have high levels of jitter and is usually the second worst way to connect after HDMI which has very high levels.

It's easier to just use TOSLINK if you have the option. For completeness, the "digital data" on the USB data lines is a modulated analog voltage. For USB 3.0 there is so much crap emitted, even as RF (so no physical connection needed) that it can clobber 2.4Ghz wireless networks that are place too close (Intel have had this issue).

USB is a computer interface and will need a computer of some sort involved in converting S/PDIF to USB audio. It's not just a simple conversion to go from S/PDIF to USB. One potential option would be something like the Sonore Sonicorbiter SE or Sonore microRendu. Those devices take an audio stream over Ethernet and convert that to USB audio that you send …
