The S20 is certainly a competent mic preamp and worked well enough with a variety of capacitor and dynamic mics across a wide range of budgetary levels. Its sound character has, if anything, a tendency towards a mild richness or warmth — although this is not immediately obvious in the manner of, say, a genuine valve-based preamp.

Self-noise of the S20 is ultralow, with the exception of a powerful pop that occurs when phantom is engaged. My first test was on an acoustic guitar; the Trident was warm and full. I wish the high-pass filter was a semiparametric, allowing me either shelf or bell curve, but it worked well as designed.

Just thought I would relay a success story. I just purchased a "non-working" Trident S20 from Guitar Center for $200. They said it wasn't working at all though and that's why the price wars lowered. I connected it and I could see audio going into the preamp by the response of the led meters but there wasn't any audio coming out of the unit.

One of my friends owns the S20. He also owns some nice vintage gear including a Neve console. A lot of people don't like Oram but it appears in this instance he's put out a decent product.
