Go to tuxguitar in the Ubuntu Software center and look if you have the java plugin plugin for playback installed. If you havn't, do so. After that you are going to have to enable it in TuxGuitar. Go to the tuxguitar menu to: Tools --> Settings --> Sound. Under midiport select Gervill. and you have sound. Let us know if that worked

Secondly,After starting timidity, in Tools->Settings->Sound->Midi Port, you need to select one of the "Timidity Port"s to use timidity. Alternatively, you can select "Gervill" to use Java Sound API, or select "Synth Input port" tu use fluidsynth. I recommend using fluidsynth. At least that works best on my system.

Timidity was already installed, but it does not appear in the Tuxguitar Alsa Plugin dropdown at all. Hmm. Stumble onto THIS thread. Find out that you have to FIRST have to run the command $ timidity -iA -Os Then I start Tuxguitar and can go enable 'Timidity port 0' in the Plugins | Tuxguitar-alsa Plugin section. Okay, sound finally works.

What Janez said is true. TuxGuitar from KXStudio repository works beautifully! One change to that post - Yes, you need Qjackctl and Qsynth running. But first: 1. Start Non Session Manager and create a new session 2. Add QSynth 3. Add TuxGuitar 4. Add jackpatch 5. Make the QjackCtl connections 6. Play a song in Tux to make sure everything is working 7.

if its true, tuxguitar will play sounds with a native alsa port.. so you need configure the plugin to run it with any software synthesizer (like timidity).. or disable it.. to play sounds with Java Sound Api + soudnbanks. Thanks for the response. I downloaded the v0.9.1 bin file. There is no plugin option on the menu.

Tuxguitar seems to be working again now. It didn't work until I removed the config folder in my home directory. Also this package include the jack audio plugin, and tuxguitar tries to load it on startup, but since I don't use jack (and its not a dependence) it fails and aborts. Deleting the plugin files worked tho.

You can use Jack MIDI output for TuxGuitar and play on any synth you like. On the other hand, I prefer MuseScore over TuxGuitar. It is not the same type of app (TuxGuitar is a dedicated 'guitar app' and MuseScore is music notation software), but MuseScore can do nearly everything that TuxGuitar can (including Guitar Pro files import) and usually does it much better.
