Go to tuxguitar in the Ubuntu Software center and look if you have the java plugin plugin for playback installed. If you havn't, do so. After that you are going to have to enable it in TuxGuitar. This worked in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu, which I have in different computers. Both are 8.10, by the way. And Tuxguitar 1.0 didn't have sound in either computer, until today -- after quite some reading of several forums.
