    Tuxguitar seems to be working again now. It didn't work until I removed the config folder in my home directory. Also this package include the jack audio plugin, and tuxguitar tries to load it on startup, but since I don't use jack (and its not a dependence) it fails and aborts. Deleting the plugin files worked tho.

    You can use Jack MIDI output for TuxGuitar and play on any synth you like. On the other hand, I prefer MuseScore over TuxGuitar. It is not the same type of app (TuxGuitar is a dedicated 'guitar app' and MuseScore is music notation software), but MuseScore can do nearly everything that TuxGuitar can (including Guitar Pro files import) and usually does it much better.
