If you were using the original Ubuntu 14.04 that came on the STCK1A8LFC then the kernel was v3.16 and HDMI audio was provided by a DKMS package. When you 'updated' it actually 'upgraded' the LTS enablement stack from v3.16 to v4.4 as v3.16 was EOL.

The audio on the TV has worked fine with both a PS3 and a PS4 as well as an older NUC, the D34010WYKH. Swapping for a different brand of cable did nothing however switching to different TVs (Samsung HPT5064X/XAC and Sony KDL-37XBR6) did show the audio from the NUC7i3BNH working fine on them.
