My system (dell dimension e520) has a separate Hoontech sound card which until recently (that is up to -I think- ubuntu 8.04) worked without a hitch. Problem : At start up, mplayer returns a message along the lines that another audio player is active and no sound is reproduced, but vlc does not have a problem and plays a/v happily.

I also have this problem (since 7.10), and would hugely appreciate your help. I am using ASUS laptop with 2Gb RAM and 2.0GHz Intel Core2Duo processor. I can't say anything about 7.04, because this is a new laptop, and the first Ubuntu version installed was 7.10. By the way, the laptop had Vista Business pre-installed, and the sound was fine there.

For the .rmvb files, it played a bit faster so probably around 1/4x speed but with no audio. Mplayer can play the audio of the files but no video. VLC works fine for .avi files, both audio and video but not for .rmvb files. I guess the codecs for 8.04 are still a little buggy and the updates will probably fix them eventually.
