    In XP I had no such issues with 720p playback using VLC. In Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64, I am experiencing the exact issues described in this thread. Artifacts during playback skipping are common on some videos. This problem makes video playback virtually unwatchable. I have tried changing settings, making vlc a priority process, and it has no impact.
