From your description this is a codec issue, please install the codecs, Ubuntu doesn't ship those by default for legal reasons, and we can't do anything on Amarok's side to trigger a download. For the Xine backend you need libxine1-ffmpeg, for gstreamer the various gstreamer codecs.
