Help I’m having trouble with skipping choppy audio on my Raspberry Pi 3 running Ubuntu MATE 16.04 LTS. At 1st I didn’t have any audio at all, but I found this post that suggested I add hdmi_drive=2 to the config.txt file. That fixed the no audio problem, but now the audio is constantly skipping and popping.

For whatever reason, Gnome is laggy under Ubuntu. It was so irritating that I had to move off of Ubuntu to another distro (Siduction = Debian Testing in a rolling release distro) and Gnome is quick and snappy on it. There was quite a difference. Whatever it is, the Ubuntu developers need to do some optimization.

With IO-APIC enabled the sound was choppy, if disabled everything works. And if it was enabled the number of the used cores doesn't matter. Even with a highend Core i-7 (Sandy Bridge, 4 cores, 8 threads) i had interruptions in the sound. For audio to work flawlessly, disable the IO-APIC, set the cores to 1.
