i did. apparently gsm was an audio format used in telephony (and not music). that "was" is a little unclear, this page seems to support the use of past tense but isn't much clearer, either. in other words, i believe that .gsm as a file format might have been a thing in 2008 (when op started this thread) but not anymore - even for telephony. but i'm mostly guessing.
