As noted in the comments on the question in this particular instance the issue was that Rhythmbox was muted in settings. I have a clean 12.04 install. Imported my mp3's (from a windows share) into Rhythmbox and although they do appear to be playing no sounds is to be heard. Playing a radio-stream works just fine. Playing the same MP3 in Spotify works fine too. I have looked at the mixer settings (but as radio is playing that does not seem to be the issue).

Check if you disabled the audio by a combination like Fn + a key (it is present on all notebooks),then if the first check it's false,control if the entry headphone is cheched,you can find that under the speaker icon,right click ther,then Open Volume Control->Switchs. :)

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu MATE 21.10 and can no longer play 96 KHz 24 bit FLAC files. They still play in Rhythmbox but at 44.1 KHz. I have been playing them no problem prior to Ubuntu Mate upgrade (DAC shows they are playing at 96KHz) The following is from my /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and has been working fine.
