I then reloaded the Firewire 410 software from the disk, rebooted, then loaded the most current driver and shut down the computer.

update: finally got a response from m-audio. they recommend that driver 1.7.4 (for Mac OSX 10.4.8) is installed instead of the advertised driver (1.8.2). this worked for a day, but now my firewire 410 is not being recognised at all, and the blue LED continues to flash rapidly.
