Mostly I record female pop vocals (where the singer don't have great mic technique). In the record chain I use the 1176 (A=10 o'clock R= 4 o'clock Ratio 4 GR on average 1-3 but on peaks up to 10 or even more) While mixing I use the sonalksis compressor and I still need to set the attack fast (2 - 3ms) to catch the unpleasant peaks.

Chaining the 1176LN and LA-2A ... - Universal Audio

The most common combination is to put the 1176 first and set it up as a peak limiter. To do this, set a high compression ratio, like 12:1, and a fairly fast attack and release. The point here is to just flatten the higher peaks. This compressor should not be doing a whole lot, just knocking 2 to 3 dB off of the loudest peaks.

I think its an excellent limiter with clean, fast compression, that does not add mid range distortion and cloud the audio, or soak up the bottom. There is much better fidelity found with the MC77 than other 1176 type boxes, which makes an a excellent tool for bass and vocals, guitars and of course a ton of other stuff in my experience.
