The theoretical speeds are fairly close (~6GB per second with internal drives, compared the ~5GB per second over USB 3.0, although obviously real world speeds are lower in both cases) so I would assume there wouldn't be a gigantic difference in speed if I were to get an external enclosure and slap a drive in it, vs. my internal drives.
