Maybe it is the case that Abelton is switching the internal audio sample rate of the Mac and that is then messing up playback for other audio on the laptop. I don't think what I'm hearing is actually regular distortion - more like digital glitching/misreading due to playing back audio at one sample rate through an audio system set to another.

The best fix I've found for that is increasing the scene buffering to no less than 700ms and higher if you need it. static mic, mic cutting in and out usually means that there is bandwidth issues somewhere with the USB mic but increasing scene buffering usually fixes it.
