The sound goes from the laptop to the tv through the vga section (theres a vga socket and an 1/8 inch for audio). So whatever audio comes out of the tv (optical cable) goes to the receiver. The buzz happens whether the 1/8 audio cable is plugged in or not and only when "pc" source is selected on the tv.

The higher frequency signal of the VGA stream can sometimes create noise in the audio...Might be a bad pin, or something like that. I have run into the issues with one Audio plug left out of the laptop or PC and so without the circuit being 'closed' I have heard that noise.

The square-wavenature of the vertical sync signal means it has great capabilities of inducing signals in other cables.
