I understand the tape in a normal VHS shell was similar to TDK SA, or a chrome or psuedo chrome, which is an excellent audio recording tape. The fact that they could run the linear audio analog track at half cassette speed (15/16ips) on a narrow track- admittedly not hifi- says it was a good tape on that score alone.
