My experience is that VIA is a bit lighter on resources [CPU] for audio, but a bit lower as well on the quality. Realtek is higher quality sound with more CPU usage, but overall they both suck compared to discreet cards. If you can afford an Auzentech X-Fi or Xplosion, get one of those.
